NSFAS to fund 405 000 students in 2016

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) says it plans to fund 405 000 students in 2016 alone.

Ensuring that the funds are allocated to the right people is a key concern. NSFAS executive officer Msulwana Daca says they are committed to building “a robust and strong administrative system to give money to the students who are really in need”.

NSFAS will also be funding the historical debt of 71 000 students.

Close to R10 billion will be spent by NSFAS to assist students in 2016. As part of this amount, R1.4 billion will be made available upfront for universities to help qualifying students who cannot afford registration fees.

Students at several universities in Gauteng have vowed to intensify their campaign for free education.

On Monday, the registration process was interrupted at Wits University while at the University of Johannesburg students attempted to block access to Kingsway campus.

In Pretoria, police fired stun grenades at protesting UNISA students who were demanding an end to the outsourcing of cleaning staff.
